About Kathakwa Coffee Factory

Established in 1964, the Kathakwa Coffee Factory serves approximately 1,100 smallholder producers cultivating small coffee gardens throughout the Kibugu and Nguviu villages. Operated by the Rainforest Alliance-certified Kibugu Farmer Cooperative Society, the factory supports its members through agronomic training, pre-harvest financing, and educational assistance for farming families.

After harvest, ripe cherries are hand-sorted, depulped, and fermented overnight before being washed and density-sorted using fresh water from the nearby Kii River. The peaberries then receive a final clean-water soak before drying slowly on raised African beds for 7 to 15 days, producing the remarkable sweetness, structure, and clarity that define Kenya's finest coffees.
